Patents are granted for technological inventions. These must be novel, involve an inventive step and be commercially applicable.

The patentee holds the territorial monopoly to the economic use of the invention for a maximum of 20 years. In addition, Supplementary Protection Certificates may be obtained for medicinal products and plant protection products.
